Presentation and Visualization Methods

“A picture is worth a thousand words”

Any information which is presented in a pictorial or graphical format boosts understanding of the information. This is the purpose of data visualization. It allows visual presentation of large amounts of complex data to convey information in a quick and easy manner. In this era of Big Data, visualization can make it easier for business users to analyze and use data thereby, making a huge impact on the decision-making process.

In this blog, I have selected three lines of businesses and described different visualization methods that each line can adopt to present data in a meaningful manner.

Healthcare

The healthcare industry has always generated large amounts of data. The advent of Electronic Health Records (EHR) became a trigger for data analytics as they were a valuable source for clinical research. Exploration of these records has the potential to help healthcare leaders advance from a passive understanding of data to an active support of clinical quality recommendations. The adoption rate of an EHR system has been increasing over the years which can be observed using the line graph below.

An EHR system can also help hospitals in monitoring end-to-end care delivery across a variety of settings and provide analytical capabilities to improve the quality and effectiveness of their services. The following image is a scenario analysis visualization that can be used by hospitals to reduce the rate of unnecessary C-sections in their hospital.

Education

Educational institutions can benefit from using visualization to understand trends related to students and courses such as the most popular course among students or student diversity at their university. This type of analysis can also help them understand how various factors such as campus environment, class size etc. affect a student’s performance.

The pie chart showing diversity can be useful to educational institutions to assess the social environment on their campus. A diverse learning community promotes creative and innovative thinking, increases students’ knowledge base and also gives them an opportunity for social development. Based on the data obtained, colleges and universities can make changes to their admissions policy if needed.

Creating a visual depiction of the enrollment data can provide information regarding the success of their institution. They can also use this information to analyze the different factors that motivated students to apply to their institution so that they can take appropriate steps to increase their enrollments.

Telecommunications

For the telecom sector, data visualization can be valuable to observe their service usage. For example, assessing the daily data usage of an average telecom customer provides companies such as Verizon and AT&T with an idea of how their assets can be leveraged to improve the delivery of such content.

A dashboard such as the one provided below can also help them in identifying profitable areas that can be strengthened in terms of infrastructure and services to be marketed.

Thus, we can see that data visualization is an essential tool in the decision-making process. It allows the business users to efficiently examine large amounts of data, analyze trends and identify issues so that they can make decisions that will ultimately lead their business to success.
